Job Summary/Basic Function
The UHP enrolls approximately 250 students. The UHP Director reports: 1) to
the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs for UHP-related administrative functions and 2) to an
undergraduate college dean for academic functions related to curriculum, course scheduling, and annual
evaluations related to teaching, scholarship, service, and renewal. Promotion and tenure evaluations are conducted
by the Director’s home department. The Director acts as a liaison for the UHP both on and off-campus including
other UHPs in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, managing the UHP budget, working with the
Honors Advisory Board (HAB), preparing annual reports, preparing course schedules, promoting curriculum
development, and recruiting and advising students. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
1) teaching
three credits of interdisciplinary honors courses per semester,
2) organizing UHP student and faculty professional
presentations and publications,
3) participating in some UHP educational and extra-curricular activities,
4) recruiting UHP faculty,
5) supervising UHP staff,
6) collaborating with the HAB, faculty, departmental chairs,
and deans to maintain and grow the UHP.
In addition, the director will teach at least one course per semester in his/her home department.
The successful candidate must be capable of and committed to teaching, community service and outreach, and to scholarship. Successful candidate will also have experience working with diverse populations. Additional responsibilities include involvement with departmental, college-wide, and university committees. Also, in accordance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and APSCUF, the successful candidate might be assigned to perform work at off-campus sites, in the evening/weekend college and/or provide instruction through distance education
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
An exemplary record of scholarship is essential. The ability to
supervise other faculty and administrative staff, to manage a substantial operating budget, and to counsel a diverse
student body is necessary. The optimal candidate will have excellent organization and communication skills, will
be able to work well within a team environment, and will have a collaborative leadership style. At least five years
of college level teaching experience is preferred. Individuals with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary
teaching and an internationally-focused curriculum, a willingness to recruit students, and the ability to employ
innovative curricular approaches that develop students’ critical thinking skills are strongly encouraged to apply.
Candidates will demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship through a successful
interview which will include classroom demonstrations.
Minimum of Education and Training
An earned PhD and experience with a student-centered, interdisciplinary curriculum-centered college or university level honors program are required.
