Position Description & Duties
The candidate will have demonstrated academic and leadership experience; a strong record of research and publications, and experience with undergraduate and graduate teaching. Areas of expertise are open.

The following are functions essential to performing this job.

  1. Teach courses in Africana Studies
  2. Develop and direct our graduate program.
  3. Supervise graduate students.
  4. Engage in scholarly activity through publications and conference presentations.
  5. Demonstrate and maintain professional competence and knowledge of subject matter.
  6. Normal teaching load is 2 classes per quarter (3 quarters) and when we convert to semesters (Fall 2012), 2 per semester (depending on other duties that will vary).
  7. Point person to pursue external funding opportunities for the department.
  8. Provide leadership to the department, college, and university.

Qualification Requirements

  1. An earned doctorate in an appropriate field is required.
  2. An excellent record of scholarly publications and presentations is required. 
  3. An excellent record of college teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels is preferred.
  4. Strong commitment to interdisciplinary education
  5. Demonstrated experience and commitment to supporting a diverse faculty, staff and student environment.
  6. Salary is competitive.

Africana Studies presently offers the BA as well as an undergraduate certificate in African Studies, minors, and tracks and has plans within the next two years to offer MA, and Ph.D. degrees. AFST currently has ten faculty—seven full-time and three jointly appointed.
