Honoring Charlie Slavin

Charlie Slavin, dean of the University of Maine Honors College and an associate professor of mathematics, died unexpectedly in his home yesterday at the age of 58.

Slavin joined the UMaine mathematics faculty September 1984 and was named director of the Honors Program in 1997. Among the many achievements during his tenure as director was the transition of the Honors Program, one of the country’s oldest, into a college in 2002.

Colleagues say that “At heart, he was a student of philosophy and history” who sought to understand society, arts and sports, not just numbers. “His legacy is the thousands of student lives he’s changed over the years.”

More information about Dr. Slavin is available on the University of Maine website.  http://mainecampus.com/2012/07/30/3745487/?ref=hp
