With this column, NCHC officially releases results from its survey of members’ institutional characteristics.  I will frame my remarks by saying this: it is my impression that many of us see honors education to be characterized by variability.  What I think we mean is that the local conditions in which programs start can powerfully shape resulting arrangements.  Interestingly, that sort of pattern is not common in higher education, where instead departments that form around disciplines tend toward greater homogeneity.  That difference makes this effort to provide descriptive information on collegiate honors education an important test of our shared understanding.  Let me begin by describing the sample.
