Franklin McGuire, The Citadel
Nominee for Student Board Member, 1-year
I am running for student representative on the NCHC Board of Directors. I’m a junior English major at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where I’m a member of the honors program directed by Dr. Jack Rhodes.
Honors education is important to me because it has been the source of all my greatest opportunities in college. In particular, I’ve had the opportunity to spend an extended amount of time abroad, including a semester spent studying leadership at Oxford, a summer spent living in France, and a summer spent interning in Parliament in London and doing humanitarian work in sub-Saharan Africa.
These opportunities honors education has afforded me motivate me to play an active role in giving back by seeking to build up not only my own honors program, but honors education in general. I used my Africa experience to come back to The Citadel and start a new, fully-funded study abroad program—the Honors Experiential Leadership Program (HELP)—which will allow other students from my honors program to also go to Uganda next year to engage in service learning. I look forward to sharing the results of this new program with other NCHC schools at our next conference so that we can all work to better integrate service-based leadership into honors education as we seek to prepare global citizen-leaders for the next generation.
Therefore, because of the skills and drive I will bring to this position, my vision and passion for honors education, and my dedication to this organization, I would ask you to support me as one of your choices for the one-year student representative on the national board. I promise to do my best in every way to help move this organization forward with excellence. Let me know if you have any specific questions for me (fmcguire@citadel.edu); otherwise, thank you for your consideration!
